About Moraka Menstrual Cups

Our Background

Moraka Menstrual Cups is a New Zealand charitable social enterprise. Originally started from the Young Enterprise Scheme in 2019 started by CEO and founder Shuari Naidoo at 16 who wanted to create an organization with a social long-term impact. Thus Moraka was born!

‘Moraka’ means freedom of the body and expression. This aligns with our core values of feminism and gender equity. When you use a menstrual cup you should feel free and unconstrained by society’s stigma of periods.

Moraka’s mission is to provide affordable, accessible sustainable and cost effective menstrual cups that counter the issue of period poverty and menstrual taboo in society. Moraka Menstrual Cups are a safer, healthier, and eco-friendly option for your period. We believe menstrual cups should be accessible to everyone who menstruates.

Period poverty is a serious issue that affects 1 in every 5 New Zealanders. We want to reduce period poverty (a concept used to describe people who cannot afford period products) and break the stigma of periods in our society. Having access to proper products is a human right and no one should have to go with the basics.

Pads and tampons make up 5000 tonnes of landfill in our environment. Disposable period products are detrimental to our ecosystem and oceans causing insurmountable levels of pollution.

How do we work? As a social enterprise, we are working towards alleviating period poverty, reducing waste in our environment, and educating people on menstruation. Our focus is on Maori, Pasikca, ethnic communities, and young people in Aotearoa who are the most vulnerable to experiencing period poverty.

If you purchase a Moraka we reinvest our funds into donating cups to disadvantaged communities and educational workshops across New Zealand.
